Reflecting on the Rotation

My ambulatory care rotation consisted of being in an urgent care setting doing 11-hour shifts three days during the week and one 8-hour weekend shift for five weeks. My shifts during the week were 9am-8pm and 9am-5pm on the weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed my five weeks working in the urgent care seeing many different patients with many different pathologies. Some days were a bit slower were we saw 8-10 patients, and other days were saw roughly 3-4 patients an hour for the whole day. Patients would come in and talk to the front desk. Site Evaluation Summary

For my site evaluations, I did three History and Physicals on three different patients. She then had some very salty food which helped with her dizziness, but then started feeling like her blood pressure was spiking. I believe she either had hypoglycemia or was not compliant with her hypertension medication. The second patient I …

The patient said he took some Tylenol last night, but it was not really helping. …

Ambulatory Care – PICO #1

While working in an urgent care, a mother and her 5-year-old daughter come in. The mother explains that her daughter is crying with urination and her daughter has said that her urine smells “funny.” The daughter also has a low-grade fever and does admit to some burning when she urinates. The urinalysis has elevated leukocyte esterase and nitrites so you diagnose the patient with a urinary tract infection. The mother asks how long does her child need to be on the antibiotics for. Search Question: For children with urinary tract infections, does a shorter course of antibiotics lead to a …

Syphilis Treatment: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Investigating Nonpenicillin Therapeutic Strategies Penicillin G Benzathine is the universally recognized treatment for syphilis all over the world. There are also syphilis patients who are severely allergic to penicillin who need treatment as well. This study looks at penicillin alternatives that can be just as effective in treating non-neurological syphilis as penicillin is. The authors of this study did a systematic …
